Zionsville Dedicates Historic Marker

Wednesday morning the Zionsville Parks Department celebrated the dedication of the Train Depot Historic Marker on the Big-4 Rail Trail with

Sullivan Munce Cultural Center

. The marker is located near the Nancy Burton Trailhead and the Starkey Rd bridge.

On this site stood the Zionsville Train Depot. The Depot served the New York Central Railroad from 1923 until it was decommissioned in 1961. The Depot was moved to this location from its original home near Firdt Street in what is now Lincoln Park.

The western tracks were completed in 1921 and the Depot was moved to this location in 1923 by Frank M. Gregory for $500.

The railroad moved the tracks and Depot west primarily for safety reasons as Zionsville’s growing population was increasingly in danger from the proximity to trains speeding through the Village!

The Depot was demolished in the mid-1970s.
