This December, the Boone County Extension Homemakers (BCEH) will proudly partner with Wreaths Across America (WAA), marking the first time Boone County will participate in this national wreath-laying event. Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of American veterans through its mission to "Remember, Honor, Teach." Founded by Morrill Worcester in 1992, WAA coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery and thousands of additional locations across all 50 states and beyond. Now, in its 18th year, WAA includes over 4,700 participating locations and 7,000 sponsorship groups across the country. On Saturday, December 14, 2024, BCEH will join communities nationwide in observing National Wreaths Across America Day, laying live balsam wreaths on the headstones of American heroes. Each $17 wreath sponsorship supports WAA’s mission year-round, ensuring that veterans are honored across generations. “Every sponsorship is a meaningful gift from a grateful American who knows what it means to serve and sacrifice for the freedoms we all enjoy,” shared Karen Worcester, Executive Director of Wreaths Across America. “We are so grateful to the good people of this great nation for participating in our mission to Remember, Honor, Teach.” How the Community Can Support Boone County’s Wreath-Laying Ceremony:
Sponsor a Wreath: Each $17 contribution provides a wreath to be laid on a veteran’s headstone in Boone County, honoring those who have served. Deadline to sponsor is December 1. Here is the link to sponsor a wreath specifically for Boone County: https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/pages/183682/Overview/?relatedId=183681
Holiday Bazaar Fundraiser: On November 23, stop by the Merri Mixers booth at the BCEH Holiday Bazaar to purchase bottled water for $1, with all proceeds going toward the purchase of wreaths.
Volunteer on December 14: Help lay wreaths at Boone County cemeteries. Volunteers can sign up by contacting Judi Wilson at jaw_ltw@yahoo.com.
Boone County Extension Homemakers’ Goal BCEH aims to raise enough funds to place 100 wreaths at Boone County cemeteries this year. The event is a meaningful way for Boone County residents to show gratitude to those who served in the U.S. military. Together, the people of Boone County will join thousands across the nation to reflect on our shared history and the sacrifices made for freedom. For further details on the event or to contribute, please reach out to Boone County Extension Homemakers or the Purdue Extension Office in Boone County.
