Warmer weather means that ticks are starting to come out. Ticks are vectors for various diseases, meaning their bites can transmit bacteria and viruses that cause Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, to name a few.
Ticks thrive in tall grass, leaf litter, and damp ground cover. If you are entering grassy, wooded, or brushy areas, wear insect repellent and long sleeves and pants.
Showering 2 hours after coming indoors has been proven to reduce your risk of infected bites, as it can take up to 6 hours for a tick to firmly take hold. Also complete a tick check; Common places include:
- Under the arms
- In and around the ears
- In and around the hair
- Inside belly button
- Back of the knees
- Between the legs
- Around the waist
If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, a rash, or swollen lymph nodes within a month of being bitten, contact your doctor so you can limit effects with antibiotics.
