Shirley Broughton

Mrs. Shirley Broughton, 85, of Thorntown, formerly of Big Sandy, TN, passed away Monday, June 10, 2024, at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis. She was born Jun. 25, 1938, in Rushville, a daughter of the late Kenneth and Frances (Richardson) McCully. Shirley married Dan Lee Broughton in 1958, and he preceded her in death Jan. 27, 2020. Shirley graduated from Rushville High School with the class of 1956. Alongside her husband, she owned and operated the Stumpwater Camp in Big Sandy, TN, from 1988 until 2020. Shirley enjoyed being social and everyone loved her. She had a quick wit and was full of sass. Her family was important to her, especially her grandkids and her great grandkids. Shirley enjoyed painting, crafting, and walking. She was a member of the New Harmony Baptist Church in Paris, TN, where she volunteered with the food drives. She enjoyed participating in a crafting group that helped to support Tomorrow’s Hope, a nonprofit that benefits women in need. Survivors include her children, Lee (John) Warner of Bloomington, Chris Ulery of Elkhart, Danny (Veronica) Broughton of Pittsboro, and Kathy (Joe) Keith of Thorntown; brother, Tom (Susan) McCully of West Lafayette; 14 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Nelson. Family and friends will gather Saturday, Jun. 22, for a Celebration of Life from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the Sugar Creek Art Center, 127 S. Pearl St., Thorntown, IN 46071.
