Olympic Update

>>Paris Olympics Opening Ceremonies Kickoff Summer Games (Paris) -- The Paris Olympics are officially underway. The opening ceremony took place on a rainy Friday evening along the Seine River in the City of Love. The Olympic cauldron was lit by judo gold medalist Teddy Riner and track and field gold medalist Marie-Jose Perec. American star athletes LeBron James and Coco Gauff served as the flagbearers for the United States. Two-time NBA MVP star Giannis Antetokounmpo [[ YAHN-iss ah-dedo-KOON-bo ]] served as the first Black flag bearer for Greece during the ceremony. >>First Medal Events In Paris Today (Paris) -- The first medal events of the Paris Olympics will be handed out today. In the pool, four medal events will take place including Katie Ledecky and Caeleb Dressel going for their first golds. Medals will also be up for grabs in skateboarding, men's and women's cycling, rugby 7's, judo and fencing. >>U.S. Men's Soccer Faces New Zealand Today (Marseille, France) -- The U.S. Men's Soccer Team will be looking to bounce back from a loss in its opener when it continues the group stage against New Zealand today. Team USA is coming off a disappointing loss to host nation France after falling 3-0 earlier this week. The Americans are currently at the bottom of Group A with zero points. New Zealand beat Guinea 2-1 in its first match. Meanwhile, the U.S. women's soccer team takes on Germany tomorrow looking to move to 2-and-0. >>Team USA Tennis Begins Play Saturday In Paris Olympics (Paris, France) -- The first round of Olympic tennis begins today with several Americans in action. Coco Gauff will become the youngest Olympic tennis player since 2000 when she takes the court alongside Jessica Pegula in the women's doubles tournament. Elsewhere, Danielle Collins begins the first round of the singles tournament against Germany's Laura Siegemund, and Emma Navarro is taking on Austria's Julia Grabher. In men's singles action, Americans Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz will take the court. >>US Men's Gymnastics Eye Medal Finish In Paris Olympics (Undated) -- Medals are on the mind of the U.S. Men's Gymnastics team at the Paris Olympics. The Stars and Stripes are set to compete for their first Olympic team medal since 2008. The men's qualification round in artistic gymnastics is today. The men's team final is set for Monday with the men's all-around final coming up on Wednesday. Team USA is made up of Asher Hong, Paul Juda, Brody Malone, Stephen Nedoroscik and Frederick Richard. >>Team USA Looks To Lead Medal Count Again At Paris Olympics (Paris) -- Team USA will be aiming to lead the medal count for the eighth straight Summer Olympics. The U.S. will try to top its medal total from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where Americans took home a Games-best 113 medals. The first medal events in Paris will take place today.
