Mr. John “Ron” Ehrie, 90, of Lebanon, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at his home in Lebanon, surrounded by family. He was born July 31, 1934, in Frankfort, a son of the late John Meredith Thomas and Hazel Violet (Wilson) Ehrie. John married Janice Marie Catron in 1952, and she preceded him in death in 1990. Ron was a 1952 graduate of Frankfort High School, which is where he met the love of his life, Janice. While in school, Ron was an undefeated tennis player and found his love for music, which would develop to be a lifelong passion and result in many of his fondest memories. After graduation, he attended Coyne College in Chicago where he earned his degree in electrical instrumentation. This degree would serve as the backbone to his 42- year long career with IUPUI. Ron was an incredible father, a loving son, and hilarious grandfather. He was an avid IU basketball and Chicago Cubs Fan, but he enjoyed all sports. He loved horse racing and in his later years could be found hashing bets at his computer making sure the odds played in his favor. But if you wanted to know Ron’s greatest ability, he would tell you it was his ability to play a note just from listening. Ron was a die-hard musician, his career began as early as 14 years old, and he made his last performance on his 81st birthday. He often shared memories of gigs he played with the Silver Jets, the Rythemers, and the Down to Earth Band. He loved his drums fearlessly and couldn’t wait for the moment he could bang on them once again. Ron will be missed by his children, James M. (Misty) Ehrie and Vickie King (Jeff Irwin); grandchildren, Michael (Shelley) Redman, Jr., Robert Baumgardt, Jr., Justin Ottinger, James E. Ehrie, Josh (Kristi) Spencer, Christopher Ehrie, Joseph Osborn, Jr., Jacob (Whitney) King, Andrea (Andy) Baitz, Wesley (Elly) Ehrie, and Thomas “Fred” Ehrie; 24 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Ron was preceded in death by his children, Donna (Ehrie) Osborn, John E. Ehrie, and Michelle Ehrie; and granddaughter, Missy (Redman) Prescott. Family and friends will gather Saturday, October 12, for visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 3 p.m. in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon Street, Lebanon. Ron will be laid at Bunnell Cemetery in Frankfort. You are invited to visit the website where you may sign his online register and leave a personal message at www.strawmyerdrury.com.
