Dr. James Raymond McAfee, M.D., 91, of Lebanon, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2024, at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon. He was born Nov. 24, 1932, in Indianapolis, a son of the late Thurman W. and Marguerite (Durham) McAfee. At the age of 12, his family moved to Lebanon where they resided on a farm on Ratsburg Road. Dr. McAfee assisted his father with farming from a very young age. When he was eighteen, he met the love of his life, Barbara Jean Jervis, at the Whitestown Skating Rink, where he spotted her skating and instantly fell in love with his blonde haired, blue eyed future bride. They married on Aug. 21, 1954. Dr. McAfee graduated from Lebanon High School with the class of 1951. He then attended Purdue University Pharmacy School, graduating in June 1955. He worked as a registered pharmacist for two years in Danville. Working part-time as a pharmacist, Dr. McAfee attended the Indiana University School of Medicine, graduating in June 1961. Following medical school, he served his internship in South Bend and his residency in Walkerton until 1963. He always worked hard to pay his way through college and support his family, always working multiple jobs from a young age. In February 1963, he and his family moved back to Lebanon and in the following October, they moved to their home in the Brendanwood neighborhood, where they resided for 55 years, making plenty of memories. Dr. McAfee worked as a family physician for 34 years, working hard to save the lives of many patients, including his own family. He strived to give his patients the best care and cared for more than 5,500 patients and delivered more than 1,000 babies. Dr. McAfee specialized in pediatric medicine, but he would also perform anesthesia for several doctors. He made house calls and would sometimes accept eggs for payment. Dr. McAfee was a faithful member of the Lebanon Church of Christ and he was responsible for leading others to Christ. He was a member of the Lebanon Kiwanis Club, where he served as President. He was touched by the lives of so many people, and HE touched the lives of so many people. Survivors include his loving wife of almost 70 years, Barbara Jean McAfee of Lebanon; children, Diana Lynn McAfee Gerling of Hermitage, TN, James Raymond McAfee, Jr. (Dana) of Paducah, KY, Kimberly Dawn McAfee Wheeler (Tim) of Maryville, TN, and Pamela Jean McAfee Lynch of Palm Harbor, FL; sister, Elizabeth Ann Tranter (son, Jeremy) of Lebanon; grandchildren, Jennifer Sorrow, Seth Walker, Danielle (Ryan) Driver, Caleb (Agata) Robinson, Taylor (Chelsea) Robinson, Jimmy McAfee, III (Tina), Alex Robinson, Erin (Garrett) Lane, Morgan Lynch, and Joseph, Isaiah, Anthony, Tristan, Timmie, and Bella Wheeler; and great grandchildren, Kendall, Cole, and Abrahm James Sorrow, Benjamin Driver, Maia Robinson, Audrey Robinson, Baylor Driver, Sebastian Robinson, Quincy McAfee, Charley Robinson, Bristol Driver, and Isla Jean Lane. In addition to his parents, Dr. McAfee was preceded in death by his siblings, Delma McAfee, Durham McAfee, and Charleen Fulkerson. Family and friends will gather Sunday, June 30, for visitation from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon Street, Lebanon. A funeral service will be held Monday, July 1, at 5 p.m., with visitation beginning at 4 p.m. in the Mortuary. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Lebanon Church of Christ, 1204 Indianapolis Ave., Lebanon, IN 46052. These funds will be used to further support the Malawi Project and the Redwood Montessori School.
