Boone County Sheriffs Department Investigates Reported Theft

On May 20, 2024, at approximately 11:51am, Boone County Communications Center received a 911 call from a semi-truck driver out of Mattoon, IL. The driver explained that he was flagged down by two individuals at a residence on South State Road 75 who asked to use his phone. Those individuals then took his phone, refused to return it, and then got into a truck on the property. The truck driver then lost sight of the individuals.

Law enforcement officers arrived on scene and spoke with the driver who advised the two individuals, who were in the pickup truck, went inside one of the barns on the property before law enforcement arrived on scene.

Law enforcement officers secured the scene, moved the driver to another location and removed the homeowner from the property. Upon further investigation it was determined that the driver of the truck was experiencing a mental health emergency and the events he reported did not actually occur. Law Enforcement searched the property and nothing out of the ordinary was discovered. The driver of the truck was examined by medical personnel on scene.

The trucking company was advised of the situation and reported they would be sending someone to retrieve the semi-truck. Surrounding schools were placed on a soft lockdown for the duration of the incident.
